Boogie Man
Long ago on a hot summer’s day
I went to see Santana play
John Lee Hooker was the opening act
Hadn’t heard about him back then matter of fact
Got my ticket for the show
Sat down in the center 3rd row
On stage a single chair sat alone
Next to it a single microphone
From the ceiling a spotlight shone down
Letting you know the boogie man was in town
When the lights dimmed John Lee strolled out
You could hear the screams you could hear the shouts
John sat down electric guitar in hand
And said “Hey, I’m the Boogie Man!”
His guitar started playing feet tapping in time
Laying down a blues that was mighty fine
The crowd was hushed and you could tell
That the boogie man had us under his spell
He boogied that night for an hour or so
After one last song he had to go
And I was amazed how that just one man
Could hypnotize a room to understand
That just a voice and a single guitar
Had the power to move a shooting star
The next day I quit my band
They were kind of confused didn’t understand
I said I’m going to start playing solo
After that you know I had to go
Now it’s been 35 years since that day
Since the boogie man he showed my the way
Now John’s in heaven his music’s still around
So thank you John now let’s get down
