Kentucky’s Tune

Long ago in a park up north on a Sunday afternoon
A man came up to me and he asked if I’d play him a tune
He was worn and tattered looking a lot worse than me
But to my surprise you could tell by his eyes that was where he wanted to be

He said he used to be well know but that was a long time ago
Friends call him Kentucky something about a derby in ‘54
But somewhere along the way well he lost the road he was on
Now he sleeps on park benches just to pass the night along

Can you lend me a dime for a cup of coffee please?
Well I’m no different from you except the bottle that I need
Some look for fame and fortune and others get their way
But I’ll just take the bottle cause it gets me through the day

Every once in awhile he’d buy the want ads and put’em in his sack
But every time he went for a job people say you’re too old for that
Now he walks in the city life mixing with the city sounds
Giving a damn for what he lost but not caring if it’s found

(chorus)

I flipped him a couple of coins just before I went
And he smiled at me though he knew inside the money was already spent
And as he turned and walked away and drifted into a crowd
Just before I lost sight of him I heard him sing his song out loud

(chorus)
